With Hurricane Dorian's progress up the East Coast of the U.S. in the news and more hurricanes likely on the way this season, it's a good time to re-introduce readers of this blog to Ventusky, my favorite website for real-time monitoring of temperature, precipitation, wind speed, wave action, and more: www.ventusky.com/
Curious about endangered species in your state? This interactive map from National Geographic provides information about a different endangered species for each of the 50 states. Mousing over the map shows the species and its current range. Clicking on the map reveals more information about that species. The species highlighted are a mix of vertebrates and invertebrates. www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2019/07/endangered-species-in-every-US-state-interactive-map/
Should we only be friends with people who agree with us on all things? (And, if so, how do we develop cordial or at least civil relationships with the vast numbers of people who do not agree with us on all things?) Is a social media friend the same as a "real" friend? Should all members of a group be punished for the actions of a single or a few members of the group or is collective punishment wrong? Is there a difference between saying one would like to engage in antisocial behavior and actually doing it? Should things said online be subject to punishment or should freedom of speech prevail? These are just a few of the moral and political philosophy issues raised by the recent decision of U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to pull the student visa of an incoming Harvard freshman and send him back to Lebanon after an airport search of his social media accounts found friends' social media posts that opposed U.S. policy positions. www.nytimes.com/2019/08/27/us/harvard-student-ismail-ajjawi.html
