China's stringent zero-COVID policy is facing the convergence of several confounding variables: (1) recent community transmission within several Chinese cities, notably Xi'an, of the highly contagious omicron variant, (2) widespread vaccination with domestically produced vaccines of dubious efficacy, and (3) hosting the XXIV Winter Olympics, which begin on Friday. Will China be able to maintain its zero-COVID policy? At what cost?
