Earlier this week, the MV X-Press Pearl, bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, caught fire and sank, releasing 78 tons of plastic pellets into the Indian Ocean, tens of millions of which are now covering Sri Lanka's beaches. The plastic pellets aboard the MV X-Press Pearl were to be used in the production of plastic bags.
