"Microscopy Mini-Class"

This three-day summer microscopy intensive is perfect for students about to start high school biology, looking for more hands-on lab experience, or just wanting to learn more about the microscopic world.

As we examine protists, fungi, our own cheek cells, my blood (!), food bacteria, and much more, we will learn how to use a microscope, learn how to make our own slides, learn how to do staining, and learn some of the vocabulary associated with microscopy and microorganisms.

The class is small by design, but learning and interest levels are much higher if everyone is engaged: in addition to using my professional-quality microscope, students are expected to bring their own microscopes to each class. (I will provide a recommendation for what seems to be the best <$100 digital microscope on the market at the time.)

Because we will be working with live organisms, this class runs across three consecutive days -- meeting for two hours per day. Students must be at least 13 at the start of the class.

Enrollment in this summer mini-class is limited to five students (with a minimum of four students). Classes will be held at my home in Bethesda.
