Christine Keen runs Learning Outside the Box, specializing in geography, philosophy, literature, finance, and world affairs classes for independent learners. She also provides instruction in academic writing, provides one-on-one tutoring in writing and mathematics, and mentors families home schooling gifted kids. She is also the founder of the gifted home schooling communities DCMetroGiftedHomeSchooling (2009) and HomeSchoolingTaglets (2012).
Christine home schooled her children from elementary school to college. Her older son graduated summa cum laude from the University of Miami, received his PhD in molecular microbiology from Washington University in St. Louis, and is working for a biotech incubator in Cambridge, MA. Her younger son lived and studied in Morocco, France, Jordan, and Oman before graduating summa cum laude from Emory University with degrees focusing on the Middle East; after his graduate fellowship in security studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, he wrote a 2021 book on a Malian insurgent movement and is now working as a management consultant.
In addition to guiding her kids on their very different educational paths, Christine is a former futurist (which is like being a historian in reverse), author, speech writer, and strategic planner. She has degrees in philosophy from Dartmouth College and George Washington University and once upon a time was a U.S. Presidential Scholar. Strange but true: Christine has a minor planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter named after her. http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=25376+Christikeen#content
