WHEN ARE CLASSES HELD?
The start date for all classes is always shown on the webpage for that semester (e.g., Spring 2025). Live classes (in person or on Zoom) begin on the start date shown and continue for the stated number of consecutive weeks, skipping the dates specified below. I ask all families to reserve an extra week or two in case an emergency or other unanticipated event forces us to cancel a class. For my asynchronous literature classes, the start date shown is actually Week 0, reserved for introductions and class logistics information. The class actually begins the following Sunday. "Who We Are & What We Dream: Comparative Science Fiction" and "'The Play's the Thing': A Study of Modern Drama" then continue for 15 weeks straight. "Bite-Size Literature: Short Stories" takes a break the week of Thanksgiving and a three- to four-week break from mid-December into January. FALL-SEMESTER HOLIDAYS Live classes do NOT meet the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Thanksgiving week. Classes ARE held the Monday of Thanksgiving week and the Monday following Thanksgiving. Classes ARE also held on Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day and Veterans Day. SPRING-SEMESTER HOLIDAYS Live classes do NOT meet on Presidents' Day. I usually do NOT take a spring break because there is little consensus as to when that would be, but I am open to the possibility, depending on the class. I do make an effort to end my spring semester high school classes by May 1 to avoid conflict with AP exams. Note: in 2025, live classes will not meet Feb. 17-21. RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS I am open to skipping major religious holidays if two or more students in a given class will be absent to celebrate that holiday. Because I do not know in advance if that will be the case, I do not automatically build those holidays into the calendar. (Eligible holidays include, alphabetically, Diwali, Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr, Good Friday, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur.) |
