Few subjects are more important, yet seem to generate more parent-child friction, than writing.
This six-week class for middle school and high school students will feature a combination of live group classes and individual tutoring sessions, all via Zoom/Webex. Using in-class writing exercises, tailored assignments, and personalized feedback, "Art of the Essay" will provide the focused instruction students need to improve as writers, from organization and sentence structure to grammar, word choice, and all those little refinements that can make the difference between adequate and good writing and between good and great writing. "Art of the Essay" will be taught by Michael Keen. Michael is an award-winning writer and scholar -- his first book is scheduled to be released in early 2021 -- and an experienced writing tutor, having spent three years working in the Emory Writing Center, where students found that working with Michael often made the difference of an entire letter grade on their papers. Each week, students will have a live 45-minute group class *and* individual 45-minute writing sessions to be scheduled independently. Reading and writing during and outside of class is necessary and expected. Because of the nature of this opportunity, this class will be capped at 10 students.
