"Academic Writing" guides students through the process of writing a 10-page college-level research paper.

George R.R. Martin, author of The Game of Thrones series, has said, quite bluntly, "Writing is hard." In interviews, he has agreed with the witticism offered by earlier writers, "I don't like writing. I like having written."

Enjoying writing makes writing easier, but enjoying writing is clearly not a requirement to be a good writer.

For this class, students can choose to research and write on any topic they want. What might *you* want to write about? *

The idea of writing a 10-page research paper can be somewhat intimidating, which is why practicing before it "counts" is extremely helpful! Which, if any, of these aspects of writing a 10-page research paper might be of concern to you? *

doing academic research (not online) coming up with a thesis and sticking to it organizing my ideas developing a cogent argument the writing itself (choosing words, using correct punctuation, crafting sentences...) not having enough to say having too much to say unsure how to do proper footnotes and citations
