"Is That Right?: A Discussion of Everyday Ethics"
"Is That Right?" is an online discussion group for teens about ethical issues in our everyday lives. Cases are drawn from the archives of the National High School Ethics Bowl.* We will be discussing a new case every week.
Discussion is via Pumble, a free Slack-like platform that allows for asynchronous participation -- any time of day or night, any time zone. By putting their ideas into writing, students have the opportunity to put more thought into their responses. Please note: this is not a class per se. I introduce the cases and participate in the discussion as a Socratic guide, but I am not teaching. "Is That Right?" is student-driven discussion. I have created "Is That Right?" not just because I find issues of applied ethics compelling but because I think critical thinking skills, quality argumentation skills, and civil discourse skills are incredibly important for students to have an opportunity to develop. (As a bonus, students acquire familiarity with workplace communication tech.) Excellent reading skills, commitment to engagement with the material, and the maturity to participate in thoughtful discussion are a must. Because this group will be using materials designed for high school students, discussion may evolve into conversation about mature and/or controversial topics. *"Is That Right?" is not prep for an ethics bowl team or competitive in any way.
