It's time to get ready for the 2018-19 National Geographic Society geography bee!

This year's National Geographic Society geography bee for Montgomery County home schoolers will be Friday, December 14 at 1:00 pm in Kensington, MD. 

All Montgomery County home schooled students in grades 4-8 are invited to participate.  The Montgomery County bee also welcomes home schooled students in 4th-8th grade in other Maryland counties and the District of Columbia who choose to participate in the Montgomery County bee instead of any bee that may be held in their own county/district.

The winner of this school-level bee will be eligible to take a written exam to try to qualify for the Maryland state geography bee held in the spring.

I am frequently asked the question, "How should my student study for the bee?"  The National Geographic Society provides no materials to prepare for the bee.  I encourage students to prepare in whatever fashion best suits their interests and learning styles.  Parents and students may find helpful some of the suggestions for preparation I have developed based on my 14 years of involvement with the bee.

This year, the bee registration fee will be $32 per student, of which $20 will be refunded the day of the bee when the student shows up and participates in the bee.  This is being done to avoid no-shows, which compromise our ability to hold an official bee for other students.  The remaining portion of the student registration fee will be used to defray the cost of the National Geographic Society bee registration fee and any necessary room rental.
