"Geography: Live Online!" A + B
Geography is our window into understanding the world around us. It helps us make sense of history and economics, peoples and culture, science and nature, politics and current events.
"Geography: Live Online!" is a creative, interactive 12-week geography class offered online for 5th-9th graders. "Geography: Live Online!" will engage students in research and a variety of games, projects, and activities designed to expand students' understanding of U.S. and world geography. Each hour-long "Geography: Live Online!" class is a mix of human geography (political boundaries, cultural and demographic patterns, cities, languages, and more) and physical geography (landforms, oceans, biomes, waterways...) with a generous dose of history, science, culture, economics, and critical thinking mixed in. To best make use of our time together, "Geography: Live Online!" employs a flipped classroom model, making the week's homework a cornerstone of our discussion the following week. My assignments are intentionally open ended, allowing students with no prior geographic knowledge and students with extensive geographic knowledge (and all those in between!) to build on their present knowledge base and go as deeply into that week's subject matter as they would like. In order to fully participate in our weekly games and activities, though, strong reading skills are a must. "Geography: Live Online!" (A) and (B) use the same approach but offer completely different learning activities. Although most students will begin with "Geography: Live Online!" (A), students can and do take (A) and (B) in either order. Honors option: for 9th graders taking "Geography: Live Online!" for high school credit and for any younger students who would like to extend their learning, there is the option of doing a special geography webquest at the conclusion of the class. *For students who have taken or who have considered taking my in-person "Hands-On Geography" classes, "Geography: Live Online!" is not "Hands-On Geography" online. It is an entirely different content-rich geography class designed for online delivery. "Thank you for creating such interesting, engaging ways for the children to explore and get to know the world!"
"Thank you, Christine, for a fun and educational experience for [my daughter]. She really enjoyed the class and learned a lot (and I did too!)." |
