"Writing in the Age of ChatGPT"
ChatGPT and its kin are here to stay.* What does it mean to be a student writer in the age of generative AI? This fast-paced online class, for 10th-12th graders only, is designed to teach writing students when and how to use generative AI as a tool in the writing process rather than just as a shortcut to a finished product. Instruction blends compositional strategies for academic writing with techniques specific to using generative AI.
In this class, we will be experimenting with prompt engineering; comparing generative AI tools and AI-generated outputs; burnishing our fact-checking and research skills; and creating original essays with support materials, including outlines, process papers, and annotated bibliographies that demonstrate student engagement in the writing process. Students will complete five short proof-of-concept papers, developing writing and research skills suitable for work in history, political science, natural science, and literature courses. Each essay will receive detailed feedback pitched to advanced high school/college-level writing. Please note: "Writing in the Age of ChatGPT" involves 10 weeks of live group meetings followed by another three to four weeks of individual research and writing time, with additional instructor meetings by appointment, and should be considered a full semester-long English composition class. Enrollment in this class is limited to six students per semester. Live classes will be held on Zoom; additional one-on-one work may be conducted asynchronously. *As of Aug. 2024, more than one-quarter of American workers reported using generative AI on the job. Gen AI is being adopted at a faster rate than either personal computers or the internet had been. "The content and instruction was fantastic! [My son] had never used Chat GPT before so it was a great introduction on what it is, how he can utilize it, and what its limitations are."
"Your classes and the feedback you've provided over the last couple of semesters have been more helpful than any other writing class I've ever taken." |
