MAPS IN THE NEWS:
For the most part, the Himalayas separate India and China, but the two countries have long-standing border disputes at both the western and the eastern ends of their long border. It is the eastern end that is currently in the news. China is trying to extend a road across the Doklam Plateau, a strategic area bordering India and claimed by both China and Bhutan (an Indian ally).
