Next year, 2019, will mark the 400-year anniversary of the first purchase of African slaves in what is now the United States. But the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade goes back at least another hundred years, primarily under the Portuguese (and primarily to Brazil). This map highlights the impact of the slave trade on African kingdoms.
